A City Designed to Live with Water
The Imbalance
Thailand has always lived between two extremes: too much water and too little. The Great Flood of 2011 exposed the vulnerability of our cities and the limitations of conventional flood management.
Perhaps the problem is not water itself, but the way we design our cities to deal with it.
A New Water City
Located between the Ping and Nan rivers, Nakhon Sawan became the starting point for a radical vision: a new urban landscape that transforms flood management into an opportunity for living, working, and growing food.
Superbowl proposes a colossal, enclosed landform approximately 20 kilometres in circumference and 150 metres high, capable of storing up to 1.5 billion cubic metres of water. Excess water would be pumped into the reservoir during the monsoon and gradually released during the dry season.
Infrastructure as Architecture
The landform becomes a city in itself. Homes, schools, markets, cinemas, and civic facilities weave through its slopes, forming an interconnected urban network envisioned to accommodate approximately 500,000 people.
Around 40% of the outer surface is reserved for forest, while agricultural terraces, renewable energy systems, and alternative mobility networks help create a more self-sustaining urban environment. Boats and public transport connect the city across its different levels.
Stop Blaming Nature
Superbowl challenges the conventional separation between infrastructure and architecture, nature and the city, and survival and everyday life.
It imagines a future in which water is no longer simply a threat to contain, but a resource that shapes how we live.
When floods return, the question is not how to keep water out. It is how to design a world in which we can live with it.
